With her album Oops, I Did It Again, Britney Spears suddenly enjoyed international success, and although Christina Aguilera started her career shortly before the millennium, she saw her greatest success with the album Back to Basics in 2006, and the Colombian singer Shakira made her international breakthrough with Whenever, Wherever.
Arguably the biggest star of the 2000s was Beyoncé. Known internationally for her solo success, she started as a member of the hugely successful R&B girl group Destiny’s Child, whose debut album Dangerously in Love included not one but two singles which made it to No. 1 in the US charts in 2003.
Male solo pop stars like Justin Timberlake were somewhat of a rarity, and the charts were dominated by Hip-Hop stars like Eminem, Kanye West and Usher.
The King & Queen of pop, Michael Jackson & Madonna, were still very much at large, and Mariah Carey made a come-back in 2005 with her album The Emancipation of Mimi, and in R&B, Alicia Keys and Rhianna were among the most successful artists of the decade.
Towards the end of the 2000s, some of the most famous pop artist of today began to emerge, like Adele, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.
