Dominik Ertl (1857-1911) fut successivement musicien, tambour-major et sous-chef de musique au Régiment d'Infanterie Autrichien Numéro 4, mieux connu sous le nom de 'Hoch- und Deutschmeister Regiment'. Ertl était un personnage très populaire dans la société mondaine de Vienne vers la fin du 19ème siècle. Il quitta l'armée pour fonder son propre orchestre avec lequel il visita de nombreux pays européens. Il a composé une dizaine de marches dont la très célèbre 'Hoch-und Deutschmeister Marsch'. Celle-ci-a naturellement été dédiée à ce glorieux régiment et, bien qu'elle soit considérée comme la plus musicale des marches militaires autrichiennes, elle ne devint jamais la marche officielle du régiment.
