This piece is based on the chapter of the same name, a part of the book 'Camera Obscura' (1839) written by Hildebrand, pen-name of the chaplain and writer/poet Nicolaas Beets (Haarlem, 1814 – Utrecht, 1903). The composition follows the story very closely: the three main characters Hildebrand, Nurks and Boerhave, as well as their vicissitudes are extremely well evoked by the music.
