Benda: Six Sonatas for Violin

Many eighteenth-century writers were lavish in their praise of Franz Benda's solo performances on the violin, noting particularly his skill in extemporaneous ornamentation. The written-out graces that appear in all movements of these sonatas provide extensive musical documentation for Benda's style of performance and, perhaps more importantly, for eighteenth-century performance practice in general.
