Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was the architect of a new world of music theatre. Undoubtedly one of history’s most important composers, famous for his operas, and a politically controversial man, browse our sheet music and scores, and let Stretta Music help you decide for yourself... master or miscreant!
Richard Wagner revolutionised music and theatre by returning them to their common origins. This he saw as ancient Greek drama, in which poetry, music and dance formed a unity. He implemented this idea of an all embracing piece of art in an exemplary fashion in the four parts of the The Ring of the Nibelung, for which the Bayreuth Festival Theatre was built.
Just as his contemporary Giuseppe Verdi is considered the archetype of Italian music, Richard Wagner truly became the epitome of the German composer.
Already during his lifetime, irreconcilable camps were formed by admirers like Franz Liszt and Anton Bruckner and opponents like Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms . Wagner also had a great influence on French composers like Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson.
Although Wagner did not write number operas, rather a free flowing theatrical whole, held together with "Leitmotivs", themes representing characters, objects or places, some highlights can be extracted from his works and performed by amateurs and professionals alike. For choirs, the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin and a classic for all male voice choirs Steuermann, lass die Wacht from The Flying Dutchman are excellent examples.
