The “King of the Waltz” and operetta master Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) was a true superstar of his time. Many quotes from his contemporaries can attest to this. His most famous works include the operetta Die Fledermaus and his waltz The Blue Danube. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore all his wonderful works with Stretta Music today!
As the son of composer and musician Johann Strauss I, Strauss’ career may have seemed predetermined. His father, however, left his family and actually wanted to forbid Strauss from starting a career as a musician. It was only through the support of his mother that Strauss became one of the most important composers of the 19th century, surpassing even the work of his father.
After Johann Strauss I’s death, Strauss took over his father’s orchestra, which he had founded as the first ever touring orchestra, and merged it with his own. Thanks to his many tours, Strauss made a name for himself internationally as an operetta, waltz and polka composer.
The music of the Strauss family, which also includes the compositions of his brothers Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss, is still an essential part of the traditional Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert to this day.
