"There is nothing more musical than a sunset." Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Shimmering summer heat, static impressions of nature, and the daydreams of a mythical creature, Debussy introduced never before heard sounds and colours to the world of western music. Browse our sheet music and scores, and experience first-hand the marvels of Debussy with Stretta Music today.
Debussy’s unmistakable sound is made up of the most diverse ingredients, pentatonic and whole tone scales, French Baroque music, preforms of jazz, salon music and folk music. At the Paris World Exhibition in 1889, he experienced Japanese and Javanese music, which had a profound influence on his compositional development.
Debussy was a friend of the composers Erik Satie and Igor Stravinsky, and he was an admirer (though not an imitator) of Richard Wagner.
His only completed opera Pelléas et Mélisande is still regularly performed at all the world’s greatest opera houses today.
In addition to his choral and chamber music, the great orchestral work La Mer, the three-minute piece Syrinx for Solo Flute and famous piano pieces such as Deux Arabesques, Children’s Corner, Le Petit Nègre and Clair de Lune are but a few highlights of his great work.
